1969 - The original 140 foot first bay and a small office were erected. There were five employees (four original partners and a secretary). By the end of the year there were 18 employees. 1970 - An 80 foot addition with craneways and a roof was added to each end of the first bay. There were 27 employees. 1971 -The second bay was built, and office addition was erected, additional storage area, and the lean-tos were added. There were 33 employees by the end of the year. 1972 - The fourth bay and the shotblasting addition were built. There were 39 employees. 1973 - No new additions. There were 37 employees. 1974 -The third bay was added and enclosed. We also purchased the plate shear, the roll and the first promacut saw. There were 52 employees by the end of the year. 1975 - No new additions. The press brake and a conveyor for the promacut were acquired this year. There were 58 employees. 1976 - The shop office, lunchroom, and washroom were added. The fourth bay was partially enclosed, more parking space was added, and the entranceway to the office was built. There were 47 employees. 1977 - The paint storage area was constructed and the office was landscaped. There were 47 employees. 1978 - The receiving office and maintenance crib were built. An office addition was added and the back lot was graded and stoned. There were 62 employees. 1979 -No new additions. The pandjiris tank roll was purchased. There were 74 employees. 1980 - No new additions. The new promacut saw and conveyor was purchased. There were 81 employees. 1981 - Bay 5 was erected and the stockade fence was added. There were 77 employees. Almet made a commitment to enter the computer age with the purchase of a Qantel mainframe and writing our own software for costing, payroll and inventory control. 1982 - The drill line and forklift were purchased. There were 77 employees. 1983 - The north wall west end of the fourth bay was finished. There were 78 employees. 1984 - Started work on decking and siding to fully enclose our 4th bay. 1985 - Completed work on the 4th bay for use as enclosed storage of raw materials. 1986 - Almet purchased the property to the south by the railroad tracks to expand employee parking and outside storage of raw materials. 1987 - Purchased additional property to the north and added our 74' X 300' 6th bay addition equipped with a 20 ton and a 10 ton overhead crane. 1988 - A second story was added to the current office as the new home for the Almet Engineering Department. During this year Almet fabricated fifteen trusses for the Allen County Memorial Coliseum expansion. These trusses were unique in that they were almost 285 feet long, 24 feet deep and weighed almost 100 tons each. We fabricated 7659 tons of structural steel. 1989 - In June, a cambering machine was purchased and installed in bay 6. Our 25 ton Travel Lift was purchased and installed for use in the storage yard in August. Almet made a commitment to computer aided drafting technology with the purchase of a HP 310 CAD Station with SDS II software. Two sales offices and a small conference room were constructed in the area that had been the maintenance crib. We fabricated 6089 tons of structural steel. 1990 - Almet started designing and fabricating stationary and portable asphalt plants for both the domestic and foreign markets under the trade name of Almix. We fabricated 7998 tons of structural steel. 1991 - Added another section of concrete slab in Bay 4. We fabricated 5451 tons of structural steel. 1992 - In June, our plate shot blast machine, was placed into service Bay 4. In July, Almet earned certification as an AISC Certified Category II Shop. The connecting link between 4th, 5th and 6th Bay was added. We fabricated 6210 tons of structural steel. 1993 - Another PC computer station was added to our Engineering Department. A concrete slab was added to complete the floor in Bay 4. We fabricated 4379 tons of structural steel. 1994 - We fabricated 5914 tons of structural steel. 1995 - In February, Almet held a 25 year anniversary celebration. In May, Co-Founder and Chairman of the Board, Richard P. Greim, passed away. Front office, sales, lunch room and men's locker room were all expanded and remodeled after more than 20 years of use. In June, our 6th Bay roof was insulated. In July, Almet was once again certified as an AISC Certified Category II Shop for another three year period. Three more PC computer stations were added in the Engineering Department. We fabricated 6400 tons of structural steel. 1996 - Our 99th Almix plant was taken to Las Vegas, Nevada for CON EXPO-CON/AGG '96 Show. New entry to front office was created, exterior of building had extensive repair and painting performed. A new additional 5 ton overhead crane was purchased and installed in Bay 5. 1997 - Almet experienced their best fiscal year ever. An additional 5 ton overhead crane was purchased and installed in Bay 3. A state of the art baghouse and cyclone were added to the burn table. Almet was re-certified as an AISC Category II Shop with sophisticated paint endorsement and fracture critical endorsement in July. | |
